Charles Ponzi is an Italian scam artist and fraudster in the United States and Canada. His pseudonyms include Charles Ponci, Carlo and Charles P. Bianchi. Born and raised in Italy, he was known in the early 1920s as a fraudster in North America with his plans to make money. It promised its customers 50% profit within 45 days or 100% within 90 days, by purchasing discount postal reply coupons in other countries and redeeming them at denominations in the US as a form of arbitration. In fact, Ponzi is paying investors up front using the investments of subsequent investors. Although this type of fraudulent investment scheme was not originally invented by Ponzi, it is so identified with it that it is now called the "Ponzi scheme".
